A crowd gathered as the UU* =ic+summarily frustrated brothers contemplated UU* =(hacking a camel. The story-teller then 4UU* =(paused to ask me the reason for and the UcUU* =Ha/solution to their frustration. But, of course, PrUU* =-you all know how a wise passer-by, on seeing UU* =/a frantic crowd blocking his way, gets off and UU* =, )lends his camel. When the UU8 mb(Flyash project gets funded, the project UU8 (would pay all costs in transporting the UUUU8 (fertiliser to the forestation site, and UU8 wa%would bear the cost of planting. HowUU8  f)ever, for the seedlings to thrive, it is hUU8  I(very important that the local villagers ugUU8 ul)look after and guard the seedlings until m'UU8 'trees could be harvested for their comout3UU8 'mon benefit. After talking to Mr. Agaruir?UU8 UU"wal I felt that our ongoing SEEDS KUU8 d )project has already started the creation WUU8 r 'of a community spirit in the 100 or so e acUU8 l &villages in our project area. Thus my oUU8 rl*expectation is that the seedlings will be {UU8 al*looked after. As I write this (in January UU8 ) $1995), my expectation is that large pUU8 'scale funding will be forthcoming from fuUU8  Canada. We should know in a few l UU@8 in months. UU H UU"2. Rotary Project in Andheisahi -UUH 8&Gopinathpur -Satyabhamapur This is a UUH 8&service project of the Rotary Village UUH UU$Corps., run by the Cuttack Mid-Town l UUH 'Rotary Club (There are three different edlUUH $Rotary Clubs in Cuttack). I came to f UUH $know of this project from my uncle, alUUH ir#Mr. Durgamadhab Behura. Mr. Behura ou#UUH $retired as Director of Agriculture, st/UUH  (Orissa, 27 years ago. Today at 84 he is t ;UUH  a(mentally and physically active and is a ecGUUH #prime mover in the Rotary project. thSUUH e (Rupee for rupee this must be one of the ri_UUH y 'most cost effective community projects on kUUH $in Orissa, probably in India. Every e wUUH fu)rupee donated to the project is actually wUUH &spent in the village. The Rotary Club UUH ro)absorbs all administrative costs and prooUUH am%vides ideas, expertise and the cost. eUUH he)Rotary also persuades local officials to .- > Z = ? < U- = ?6ntUUH H'provide certain facilities like, road, fUUH 'school, electricity and so on. For conUUH Mr+struction, planting etc. the villagers proUU*UU@H asvide the labour. DUU I UU The three villages are located daOUUI &about 45 minutes away by car from Cut[UUI ec'tack city. Mr. Behura, Mike Powell and RotgUUI ,I spent the better part of a day at the vil osUUI #lage. We visited only one village, munUUI (because of shortage of time. Ours was a ndUUI $surprise visit; yet we saw activity jeUUI $around us. We talked to whoever was . UUI UU&around in the village. So what we saw UUI o'is real, not a well rehearsed show. We iseUUI &saw trees planted and flourishing; we UUI  .#saw a pre-school with kids singing UUI %away; we saw a pond with fish stock. UUI id'The fish will provide good cash return UUI ol&when sold in the local market. We saw UUI st'piles of straw for fodder and roofing. UUUUI as(We talked to villagers that happened to TUUI ar(be around. They were full of praise for mUUI  f$the project and wanted more. It was y.'UU@I Po impressive. @UU K I !To provide drinking water, they hKUUK UU&have sunk 12 hand operated tubewells. WUUK UU'We saw several in use. To provide irrirs cUUK UU&gation they have sunk one large diameoUUK UU!ter diesel powered tubewell. The h{UUK &villagers have built a pump house and UUK %irrigation channels of brick and conrUUK 'crete. The bricks are locally made. We louUUK 'saw one brick pile oven which had just sinUUK UU&been fired. We were told that the new UU@K UU)bricks are for the veterinary hospital. eUU L UU%The success in agriculture has been .UUL UU"dramatic. With improved stock and UUL %instructions in usage of compost and sUUL T&fertilisers, the paddy yield has been UUL fo'doubled. New quality seedlings has led wa UUL y.*to a variety of high yield vegetables for UUL pr(family use and marketing. The villagers K#UUL  h%have been given advice on what trees K/UUL al#to plant in the backyard. We saw a UU;UUL hesmall garden patch with mango, GUUL di!banana, papaya, bamboo, chakunda SUUL I)trees, all flourishing and now about 40- U_UUL on'50ft tall. The whole idea is that each KkUUL ri)family, with a small plot of land can be KwUUL k 'self sufficient in basic needs such as KUUL We)fuel, fodder and fruits and vegetables. UUUL he"With Rotary funding the villagers UUL ce&started building a high school.. Each UUL . %year they have added one new room to LUQ, ? Z > B < sUQ, > I6ieUUL &the school. They have already reached UUL 'Class 7 and are planning to go to StaneldUUL (dard 12 (+2). The salaries of the teach. *UUL #ers are being met >from Rotary and ice6UUL %government funds. We saw the school, aBUU@L (but on that day there were no classes. ma\UU M UU"The villagers have also built an gUUM UU$one room pre-school. I saw about 20 owsUUM (happy kindergarten level children, sing tUUM &ing away. I had a brief chat with the UUM 'lady teacher. The same school house is c nUUM )used for vocational instructions such as nUUM *tailoring, for health information such as UUM UU'birth control. What remains to be done . EUUM L&here? The villagers told me that they UUM (badly need a veterinary hospital. All UUM (the hospital is a two tiny rooms with a olUUM y "roof.The foundation has been dug, UUM  t!some stones and bricks are lying UUM e #around. The project has run out of LUUM g (funds. Estimated cost for completion is UUM . $Rs100,000. =US$3000.
