After super cyclone most of thecoastal villages were severely affected by underproduction of food grain,this was primarily due tochange in soil chemistry and severe lack of water forcultivation. Unnayan with support of Seeds intervenedat this juncture to provide system which could solvethe irrigation requirement of villagers. This waspossible only with initiation of strong local actionwhich latter was streamlined as pani panchayat orwater user association. Thiscomponent was not incorporated in the projectearlier.Therefore understanding its need andnecessity, secretary of the organization wasinterested to include this component in the project.Inavailability of fund has led to postponement of workfor three days. work is now in full swing as Rs50,000.00 in cash was paid to the organization towardspurchase of materials.B.length-38ft,width-30,depth-07ft.work is completedupto foundation level, like first dam, side supportwall for this dam is also required. Seven menconstruction committee is also constituted tosupervise the progress of work. Labor contributionfrom the villagers as discussed with Mr Duryodhansandh is quite spontaneous.20% of the wages of thelaborer is contributed voluntarily. The water whichthe dam can hold will be sufficient to irrigateatleast 55 acres of land in both sides. The water ofthis dam can be lifted by pump and can be divertedtowards field for irrigation.Dam in Chaulidiha village:Excavation for plinth of the dam is completed.Material for construction has already reached site, Noconstruction work has started. Length of the dam-60ft,Width-40ft,depth-11ft.85 household.32 HH will bedirectly benefited as the water from the dam canirrigate atleast 60 acres of land for cultivation. Ifcanal is dug than 15 more acres of land can getirrigated.2.Land leveling A.10 acres of land belonging to 17beneficiaries in Kandaichhapar village has beenleveled. 274 man-days has been created,out of these 40percent of mandays was contributed by thebeneficiaries. Payment has been made @ Rs. 40/-man-day. Feedback from the people reveals that becauseof land leveling, land will be able to retain waterand moisture for a longer period and this will resultin better agricultural output.B.17 acres of land belonging to 19 beneficiaries inChawaldiha village has been leveled. 521 man-days havebeen created; out of these 40 percent of mandays wascontributed by the beneficiaries.
